If grown-ups were allowed
to sit on Santa's knee I'd
plop me down right on his lap
And this would be my plea.
"Dear Santa, I know that I can't have
the thing that I want most"
('cause that would be to bring you home,
so I could hold you close.)
I'd tell him how much you are missed
and that we love you so
and ask him please, on Christmas Eve
If he could let you know.
I'd say we know you love us, too
Enough to risk your life...
to keep us safe, our country free
from tyranny and strife.
But Santa Claus, that jolly elf
Can't do these things you see So I'll just ask the Lord above
To keep you safe for me.
I'll pray for Him to let you know
How proud we are of you
And that we wait here anxiously
As you do...what you must do.
I ache with longing for you,
I wish we weren't apart
But you will be 'home for Christmas'
Your presence is in our heart
